2017 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The course descriptions  below cover all courses instructed at both studios, subject to availability.

ANIME – MANGA

Anime” is the short for “animation” (アニメーション) in the Japanese language, and “Manga” (漫画) is the word for “comic books”. The students will briefly explore the history and learn some of the basic techniques that makes this unique medium of visual storytelling so popular around the world. Students will then focus on applying these techniques and skills toward putting together a short story, designing characters and combining all these wonderful elements into their own form of anime art.


COMICS AND CARTOONING (Drawing Course)

Action! Romance! Mystery, and Comedy! Ever wonder why certain American Super Hero comic books are awesome and exciting but some are dull and boring? This class will teach you how to draw comic books the right way and elevate your art skills and sequential storytelling techniques to a professional level!  At class, the students will briefly explore the history and learn some of the basic techniques that makes this unique medium of visual storytelling so popular around the world. Students will then focus on applying these techniques and skills toward putting together a short story, designing characters and combining all these wonderful elements.


2D CHARACTER ANIMATION 

This is a hands on 2D animation course that will teach traditional principles necessary for building a strong foundation in hand drawn animation using Adobe Flash. The class will go through the History of Animation, procedures and process, and the tools and terms involved in creating traditional animation. The students will also work on the fundamentals of animation such as squash and stretch, arcs, timing, as well as core drawing skills such as perspective, volume, proportion and anatomy. This class also emphasizes artistic creativity, intending to push the boundaries of imagination and to familiarize students with Story, acting, character development, and dramatic structure.


2D GAMING ANIMATION

In this course we build a Basic Gaming Platform, using Flash. Flash is a great tool for building animations and games. With Flash Animation has the ability to publish an animation to a sprite sheet. Another advantage of working with a sprite sheet is that you can use Flash to build animations for gaming environments other than Flash Player.


FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING

This course focuses on the development of observational skills and drawing techniques, Students in this course will develop both technical abilities and creative responses to material and subject matter. No prior experience with drawing is required or expected. In this class, students will learn: Ink Line Proportion Perspective, one, two and three point , Line quality. Pose2D size,  perception,Body Proportion,Gestures,Volume ,  Shading, and Art Design.

DIGITAL PAINTING WITH PHOTOSHOP

We will switch from using pencil and paper to using digital drawing programs like Photoshop. If students have a cell phone or tablet we will work towards making it into a portable sketchbook. If the student doesn’t have a portable digital device, they can use the Wacom tablets available at Elite. In class sessions will cover all the principles shape, form, line, value, color, space, composition, emphasis, rhythm, and exaggeration. Advantages of the digital medium will be covered and time saving tips covered so the student spends more time drawing and painting rather than dealing with an elaborate interface.


NEW ! DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION WITH PHOTOSHOP

Digital Illustration is the use of digital tools to produce images under the direct manipulation of the artist, usually through a pointing device such as a tablet or mouse. Our Instructor shares his techniques for digital drawing in Adobe Photoshop to understand the whole Illustration Process. From creating a piece of artwork from scratch, beginning by creating a new document and creating custom brushes. He explains every step in his creative process as the image evolves from a rough scribble, to a slightly more detailed sketch, to a finished product including a detailed background.


NEW ! DIGITAL STORYBOARDING WITH PHOTOSHOP

A digital storyboard is created in a similar way to one drawn on paper. The storyboard artist draws on a graphics tablet using Photoshop. Storyboarding goes digital and now making a splash with filmmakers, changing traditional tasks into fun and accessible ones, while adding the power to create, edit and share on the fly. A storyboard is a graphic organizer in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence. In animation, the storyboarding stage may be followed by simplified mock-ups called “animatics” to give a better idea of how the scene will look and feel with motion and timing. At its simplest, an animatic is a series of still images edited together and displayed in sequence with rough dialogue (i.e., scratch vocals) and/or rough soundtrack added to the sequence of still images (usually taken from a storyboard) to test whether the sound and images are working effectively together.


3D CHARACTER ANIMATION (MAYA)

Maya 3D animation software offers a comprehensive creative feature set for 3D computer animation, modeling, simulation, rendering, and compositing on a highly extensible production platform. Maya has next-generation display technology, accelerated modeling workflows, and tools for handling complex data.


CHARACTER DESIGN (Drawing Course)

Students will learn how to create appealing, charismatic different characters through a variety of stylistic drawing techniques using paper and pencil. We will be cover aspects that go into designing characters for animation. Also explore how to shape language as it relates to the characters personality.


NEW ! CHARACTER DESIGN IN PHOTOSHOP (Digital Course)

Character Design in Photoshop delivers magic that helps you bring your creative vision to life. Students will edit raw image files and other photos with state-of-the-art photo editing. Create compelling HDR images, black-and-whites, and panoramas. Retouch images with astonishing ease and control. Design anything you can imagine—at amazing speed. Students will paint and draw naturally and expressively. Even put your ideas in motion by creating stunning videos and broadcast your work in YouTube or FaceBook.


NEW! ILLUSTRATION (Drawing Course)

An illustration is a interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process, designed for integration in published media, such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and films. It Differs from a sketch. The main difference between a Sketch and a Illustration is a  sketch is a drawing that is sometimes done in a hurry, thus isn’t as great as the illustration would be. A sketch has many more foundation lines for the drawing, and for many is done on a piece of paper or a sketch book (often not in color) . An illustration is the formal and usually a completed version of the sketch and tends to be in color (Which the sketch is not) and is much more polished. If you enjoy Sketching then this would be the next step in your artistic journey !


TRADITIONAL ANIMATION 

Two decades of experience in the feature animation industry will be ‘drawn’ upon in teaching the ‘Fundamentals of Animation’ class. Animated discussions will take place- favorite shows/movies/characters/industry related topics- the good, bad, and the ugly!   Students will learn the process and evolution of animation and how to bring their drawings to life and infuse them with personality. Basic 12 Principals of Animation are instructed first then the basic fundamentals of Animation will be re-enforced and combined (for example- squash and stretch principles combined with overlapping actions).


NEW ! PRINCIPLES and ELEMENTS of DESIGN

This course is designed to teach students how to understand images and to identify the principles and element that create the effects of design. Without this foundation students will not understand visual communication necessary for industries such as illustration, photography, animation or gaming design.


SKETCHING 
 
The students will learn the basic principles used in creating a sketch. Principles include, shape, form, line, value, color, space, composition, emphasis, rhythm, and exaggeration, balance, proportion, Harmony, Variety, and texture. All classes will consist of a brief lecture in class followed by sketches done outside the classroom. We will stay close together as a class while students are encouraged to sketch what interests them the most. If it is hot, we will seek out an air conditioned venue, if it is nice out, we will sketch outside.
